A Message from Dean Hedrick
Single-Family Committee First Vice-Chairman, NAHB
Over 1,100 members of NAHB converged on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. the week of June 8, 2026, to meet with over 300 US Congressmen and Senators regarding housing industry issues. The ROAD to Housing Act was at the top of everyone’s priority list. The ROAD to Housing Act is the first piece of substantial housing legislation in over 40 years. Our message was well received and paid attention to. To be clear, the ROAD to Housing Act passed the House of Representatives and is now on its way to the Senate where we have been assured it will come on the Senate floor for a vote within the next couple of weeks.
The ROAD to Housing Act addresses updating multifamily loan limits, eliminating the sale mandate of rental properties if one entity owns 350 units or more, and provides substantial incentives for construction of homes. It also clarifies the Energy Code implementation on Federal Government backed mortgages.
Workforce Development and Immigration Reform was also discussed. The Constructs Act provides incentives to prepare future generations for a career in construction by offering funding for these programs. The Dignity Act offers a pathway for undocumented workers to become permanent and legal residents and continue to be productive members of society. While the Constructs Act gained the attention of our legislators, the Dignity Act did not make much of an impression. We at NAHB will continue to fight for both.
Other legislation pushes encouraged by NAHB included the Energy Choice Act, which would prevent local and state governments from banning the use of natural gas and propane in all future construction. We believe this legislation will pass with very few issues.
As First Vice-Chairman of Single-Family Builders for NAHB, our committee meeting continued to work on these issues mentioned above. As well, we continued to plan educational webinars for contractors. We spoke of the importance of Build-PAC at a local, state, and national level, and discussed how we as a committee can better serve NAHB and our builders.
Any thoughts you may have regarding that discussion would be welcomed, and I will be sure to bring that information to our next committee meeting. Feel free to reach out to me anytime at dean@hultco.com. The most important thing I can tell you about our LegCon trip at D.C. is this: Stop listening to the News!! There are a LOT of great things happening in Washington, D.C. that we can all be very proud of…and there is a LOT of bi-partisan legislation happening. Believe that! Because the rest is just sensationalistic political nonsense.
Dean Hedrick, Single-Family Committee First Vice-Chairman, NAHB
